Neighborhood Summary: Irving Street in the Outer Sunset

The Invest In Neighborhoods corridor of Irving Street is located in the Outer Sunset neighborhood between 19th and 27th Avenues. This area is a highly residential, middle class neighborhood that has become an ethnic enclave over the last several decades attracting young families and diverse populations, while retaining many long-time residents. This commercial district is a growing retail district with diverse and multi-ethnic food offerings, including Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Thai, Korean, Irish, Mexican and Chinese restaurants.

P1040510Irving is a destination for not only locals, but students and foodies on the hunt for good, cheap eats. Irving also has multiple financial institutions, boutiques, clothing stores, dry cleaners, pharmacies, and vibrant markets. The neighborhood is easily accessible by transit and auto.

The Outer Sunset Merchant and Professionals Association is a strong and active merchants association dedicated to the advancement of Outer Irving. There are opportunities to bridge and increase collaboration among merchants to support beautification efforts and engage in business attraction strategies to grow the economic vitality of the corridor.

Announcement: $20,000 Facade Improvement Grants for Outer Sunset IIN Corridors

They City’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) is seeking 1 or 2 NEW businesses in the Invest In Neighborhoods Corridors (Taraval, Noriega, & Irving) to receive a grant for facade improvements.

Grants can be used for storefront facade upgrades including, but not limited to, painting, new signage, awnings, lighting, removal of security grilles and roll ups (required), and rehabilitation of historic facade.

The program requires 25% matching funds. Project grants are reimbursed to the applicant once construction is completed. Businesses chosen must complete a business assessment with the Small Business Development Center. Specific Criteria: Be a new business, sign a long-term lease, and specified work must follow prevailing wage construction contractors.
